USS Arizona Memeorial
December 7, 1941 – During a surprise attack from the Empire of Japan on the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the USS Arizona was hit by a large bomb in the forward section penetrating the decks to the magazine where the device exploded instantly killing 1177 sailors and Marines. The memorial opened in 1962. The Arizona lies beneath the waves and is the final resting place of 1022 service members entombed in the ship.
